MILWAUKEE – The joy ride continues, so step in front of the Mets at your own risk.

Any fears that coach Carlos Mendoza's team might be devastated after an emotional postseason win and quick turnaround to start the playoffs were quickly dispelled Tuesday.

The Mets looked like a well-rested team and the Brewers perhaps needed a nap after an off day.

Forget the long ball.

The Mets passed the baton — as they did in a wild eighth inning in the first game of their doubleheader in Atlanta on Monday — and methodically beat the Brewers 8-4 in Game 1 of their NL Wild Card Series at American Family Field.

The Mets have two chances to win another game in this series and advance to the NLDS to face the Phillies.

The catalyst was a five-run outburst in the fifth that bore some resemblance to the six-run eighth that gave the Mets the lead on Monday.

Only this time they didn't have to come from behind on a Francisco Lindor home run in the ninth.

Luis Severino, a playoff warhorse from his Yankees tenure, gave the Mets what they needed with six solid innings in which he allowed four runs, one unearned, on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The right-hander was bloodied in the first inning but recovered to take a four-run lead over the Mets.

Jose Butto gave the Mets two perfect innings with three strikeouts behind Severino before Ryne Stanek pitched a scoreless ninth.

Postseason success has been rare for the Mets since their surprise run to win the pennant in 2015. How close?

Tuesday's win was just the second in the postseason since that World Series appearance.

Severino fell into a 2-0 hole in the first inning. Brice Turang doubled off Mark Vientos' glove and Jackson Chourio hit a single before William Contreras delivered an RBI single.

Willy Adames walked to load the bases and Rhys Hoskins was plunked to lead in the second run of the inning. Severino faced eight batters and threw 24 pitches in the inning.

Jesse Winker, who has missed the last four games with a back problem, hit a two-run triple to tie the game in the second before Starling Marte's sacrifice fly gave the Mets a 3-2 lead.

Vientos hit a single and Pete Alonso led off the inning before Winker – in the lineup primarily because he was 6 for 18 with two lifetime home runs against Freddy Peralta – blasted a shot into the right field corner and continued to run to third base .

Chourio's RBI single in the fourth tied the game at 3-3 before Contreras' groundout led to another run that was unearned after Tyrone Taylor's error on Chourio's single.

Sal Frelick doubled in the inning and Turang doubled.

After Marte was denied an extra-base hit by Chourio's diving catch at the left field fence early in the fifth, the Mets erupted with five runs off relievers Joel Payamps and Aaron Ashby.

Taylor hit a double to left and Lindor drew a two-out walk.

Jose Iglesias scored an infield hit and dove to first base to beat the throw, scoring an RBI single.

Vientos' subsequent two-run single gave the Mets a 6-4 lead.

But the Mets weren't finished in the inning.

After Vientos advanced to second base on a wild pitch, Alonso was intentionally walked, and JD Martinez pinch-hitting Winker delivered a two-run single that buried the Brewers in an 8-4 hole.
